What to check on a moving company quote
Insurance, payment terms, and what's not itemised — what to check on a removals quote before you book a moving date.
Insurance and liability is the detail that matters most
A moving quote is a promise about a specific day with your belongings on the truck, and the single most important thing it can leave out is what happens if something is lost or damaged in transit. If the quote doesn't mention insurance or liability cover at all, ask directly — this matters more than most of the pricing detail.
- Does the quote mention insurance or liability cover if goods are lost or damaged?
- Is there a claims process, or a cap on what's covered?
Payment terms and charges that aren't itemised
Removals quotes often bundle labour and transport into one figure, and it's common for extra charges — stairs, a long carry from the truck to the door, packing materials, temporary storage — to be left out of the headline number entirely. It's also worth checking when payment is actually due: a deposit with the balance on moving day is more typical than paying the full amount well in advance.
- Are labour and transport itemised separately, or one combined figure?
- Are stairs, a long carry, packing materials, or storage charged extra?
- When is payment due — a deposit now with the balance on the day, or the full amount upfront?
